Multimedia Lab

SDSU Multi-Media Lab

The IDS Multimedia Lab is a state-of-the art facility that provides faculty members teaching assistants, staff, and technology fellows with support services and hands-on access to Network-connected PC and Macintosh multimedia workstations. The Multi-Media Lab staff can provide assistance to faculty members for developing multimedia for classroom and for web-based use. Support and training are available to all faculty members for the use of advanced hardware and software resources.

Equipment
The Multi-Media Lab has both PC and Macintosh equipment to capture and render video in several different formats (e.g., mpeg, wmv, mov). Files can be burned directly to DVD. These formats allow files to be delivered in a classroom setting, shared with a colleague through a disc format, streamed over the Internet through a specified server, or provide links within Desir2Learn (D2L). Mini DV tapes can be directly processed to VHS tape or to DVD, which skips capturing and rendering. Mini DV tapes can be captured and rendered as well. The lab has equipment available to scan images, multiple-page documents, and professional slide scanning. The document scanner allows you to choose either PDF (which uses HP Director Software) or editable text formats (which uses OmniPage Pro) making it possible to choose an option that best fits your needs.

Software
Software is available from the beginner level to the professional level. Video editing titles include Windows Movie Maker, Windows Media Encoder, Pinnacle Studio 9, and Adobe Premiere. Professional audio software, Adobe Audition and Quick Time Pro, allows you to work with a broad range of audio file formats. Software for PC and for Macintosh is available in the Multi-Media Lab for you to learn and use. Adobe Photoshop Elements, Microsoft FrontPage, Impatica, Respondus, and a host of addtional software is available. Files can be saved to a jump drive, your Active Directory desktop, sent via e-mail, burned to CD-ROM or DVD.

Support
IDS staff and Student Technology Fellows (STFs) are available to help you learn how to use the software, equipment and how to implement the processes you need to get your projects going. Staff and STFs are available to assist you in your office as well. The Multi-Media Lab is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Making an appointment is a good idea when getting started on new projects or learning new software, but it is not required.

Training
Multimedia production, training, and support services are available. Consultation, training and assistance are available for scanning, digital photography, CD-ROM and DVD creation and duplication, Web design, graphics design and creation, poster development and creation, and for Microsoft PowerPoint development. Check-out of digital equipment that supports all stages of production is available. Scheduled training and personal consultations are available.
