Welcome

CMS-Based Online Teaching — Training Objectives

This self-study "course" will introduce you to several aspects of teaching a course online using a course management system (CMS).

  1. Quality Matters Review Rubric
  2. Adding and applying appropriate CMS tools
  3. CMS-Based Online Teaching resources
All aspects are based upon the Quality Matters rubric, which will be referred to throughout. As you can see from the menu on the left there are six (6) units, covering a variety of topics related to teaching online with a CMS. Although this is a self-guided process, assistance is readily available from the professionals at Instructional Design Services (IDS). The "Contact Us" menu item provides a convenient way to e-mail your questions and comments to the IDS team.

If you do not have a WebCT course, you will have an opportunity in Unit 1 to request one. In your course you are encouraged to apply what you learn. So-called "practice courses" are available on SDSU's R&D WebCT server, and can be requested through the same course-request form. Practice within this training course as a course designer is not possible. Instructors must have designer access to a course to be able to use the course tools.

Numerous aspects of teaching online with a CMS must be considered and many are covered in this course. Please keep the following in mind.

  1. Intentionally, there are no functional WebCT components other than login and MyWebCT in this course. Use your real or practice course to apply this tutorial material and to work with CMS functionality.
  2. The training is self-guided with a contact communication form for comments and questions.
  3. It is not comprehensive, but introduces instructors to many common aspects of SDSU's CMS and principles of teaching online.
  4. Additional face-to-face training with IDS staff is available throughout the year. Please see the IDS Training Schedule for additional training opportunities.
